7th Anniversary of SLHWSA - Celebration!

Dear Fellow Writers,

We have a good reason to celebrate: The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio is turning seven years old this July. This is an opportunity to look back and see what the Society has meant to all of us. Thus, to celebrate our Anniversary we would like to invite all of you to attend our next meeting.

Instead of a guest speaker, we want to hear from members who have furthered their writing career because of the Society. This program will be called:

SHOW AND TELL

If any of your writings have been published in any media (books, e-books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, etc.) in the last 18 months and you feel such accomplishment was in any way related to your association with the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio, bring your work to SHOW and TELL us all about it. We can all learn from each other’s experiences! (Note: while we can show each other’s work, we will not be able to sell it that night – it is only for showing)

Following the format of Five Minutes with You, we will take turns at sharing. Please don’t read from your work, tell us about your writing career.

Afterwards we can visit with each other and have some cake!

Concurso ICP - Convocatoria

ICP DE MIAMI CONVOCA AL XX CONCURSO DE POESÍA Y CUENTO

El pasado 15 de abril, durante la celebración del Día de la Poesía y del Idioma, el Instituto de Cultura Peruana, Inc. (www.letrasyartes. com/icp) dio a conocer las bases de su XX concurso literario que este año será en homenaje al escritor Mario Vargas Llosa, Premio Nobel 2010. Los interesados en participar en este evento deben enviar su obra por correo a la dirección indicada antes del 30 de junio de acuerdo a las siguientes bases:
1. Participantes: Hispanohablantes de cualquier nacionalidad que no hayan obtenido el Primer Premio en nuestros concursos anteriores.
2. Tema: Libre. Verso: Libre.
3. Extensión: 5 poesías cortas o un relato a doble espacio en 5 páginas de 8.5” x 11” (4A), en idioma castellano, ordenados y engrapados en 4 cuadernillos.
4. Identificació n: Los trabajos se identificarán por su título y un número que se le asignará al momento de su recepción. En un sobre aparte el concursante escribirá el título de su obra y, en su interior, sellará sus datos personales (nombre, dirección, email, teléfono, breve biografía) y una nota simple certificando que su obra es original e inédita, que no fue presentada a otro concurso pendiente de resolución, y autorizando su publicación si resulta premiada.
5. Fecha y lugar de recepción: Los trabajos participantes se recibirán por correo postal (no email) con franqueo simple hasta el 30 de junio, 2011, en ICP- Ricardo Calderón: 6105 SW 129 PL., 1808. Miami, FL 33183-5252, USA.
6. Jurado: El ICP designará oportunamente al jurado para cada género y categoría cuyo fallo será inapelable.
7. Premios: Dos pasajes Miami-Lima-Miami (en gestión) vía LAN. Publicación de los trabajos premiados en periódicos, revistas y el libro Poetas y Narradores del 2011, cuya edición del 2010 está a disposición de los interesados ($10 en EEUU). Diplomas, Mención de Honor a finalistas y otros premios, los cuales se entregarán a fines de julio en fecha y lugar que se anunciarán oportunamente.

This is an all open air arts experience to see, buy and enjoy.

On April 2nd see 60 multi-national and local professional sculptors, plus see our 1st statewideprofessional artists show.

Enjoy 100 big outdoor sculptures, numerous paintings, small sculptures and other fine arts in one 6 acre gardened venue.

Our first year the participating organizations are the Texas Society of Sculptors, and the San Antonio Visual Artists group.

The Lost Border: Essays on how life and culture have been changed by the violence along the U.S.-Mexico border

This new anthology will focus on the unique life and culture along the U.S.-Mexico border that has been changed and even lost because of the recent drug violence. This book will feature writers from both sides of the border who explore the culture that has been changed or lost, the lives that have been split in two, and the way of life that has been interrupted, or even eradicated, by the violence along the border.

Some of the questions that might be explored are: What way of life has been lost due to the recent violence? What are the ramifications of this change for culture, politics, families, institutions, the arts, and even individual psyches? Will it be possible to regain what has been truncated? What might the border’s future be? Are there any positive side-effects?

We hope that writers will conjure the past in telling moments and reflect on the forces that have spun out of control to destroy the unique bi-national, bicultural existence of la frontera. Location is a vitally important and intrinsic element of the essays we seek, and each essay should show substantial ties to the border through the essayist’s lived experience. We anticipate that the writing will draw scholars as well as those in the general public who wish to thoughtfully negotiate the border’s current complexities.

The publisher of this project will be Arte Público Press and the anticipated publication date is in 2012.

Submission Guidelines:
The deadline is August 1, 2011 postmark, without exceptions. The length of the essay should be 3,000 to 6,000 words; please title your essay. The essay should be unpublished and written in English. All contributors shall be Latino/a.

Each essay should be typed in Times Roman 12-point type with standard manuscript formatting for margins and spacing.

Include your name, snail-mail address, two contact phone numbers, two email addresses, and exact word count in the top left margin of the first page of your manuscript.

We do not accept electronic submissions. Mail two hard copies of the essay and your bio to Sergio
Troncoso, 2373 Broadway, Suite 1808, New York, NY 10024. No submission will be returned; please keep a copy for your records.

Please include a one-paragraph biography summarizing your publishing credits. Include a sentence or two that defines your relationship with the border (e.g. cities or towns lived in, length of residence/familiarity).

If your essay is accepted, we will need an electronic file as a Word document. We will contact you about suggested revisions.
